This message is a Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) update shared July 1 with parents and staff.

July 1 marks the start of state legislation that allows individuals 21 years of age and older to legally purchase cannabis products from licensed dispensaries in Maryland for personal use. While this new law provides for the legal purchase of marijuana, it is still classified under federal law as a controlled dangerous substance and is illegal under federal laws.

The Federal Drug-Free Workplace Act requires organizations that receive federal grants, including Maryland schools, to maintain drug-free environments. All Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) employees, volunteers and visitors are required to comply with this law and may not distribute, possess, use, or be under the influence of marijuana while in schools or during working hours, including but not limited to while transporting students or attending school-sponsored activities. Any use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace by staff is prohibited and violates professional expectations in place and the CCPS Employee Manual.

CCPS consequences and discipline for students who possess, use or distribute drugs on school property or at school events remain unchanged. Any student found in possession of such items at school or on school grounds will face consequences outlined in the Code of Student Conduct and possible charges by police. CCPS’ commitment to student and staff safety and providing safe and drug-free learning and working environments remains unchanged.

CCPS leadership will continue to partner with local agencies such as the Charles County Department of Health, Charles County Sheriff’s Office and Charles County Department of Social Services in order to best support students, staff, parents and families. Thank you for your continued support of CCPS.
